Awesome Konami games and the Hollywood movies that inspired them

February 13, 2015

He said his body is made up of 70% movies. Hideo Kojima that is, the director of awesome Konami games like Metal Gear. But his work doesn't stop there, as some of you may or may not know his handy work extends into other realms outside of the Solid Snake franchise. He had two other great works of art under his belt which included Policenauts and Snatcher. All three of the above mentioned games took some inspiration from Hollywood movies in some way or another.

Even the classic run and gun shooter Contra seemed to have had some influence from the movie industry, so why don't we take a quick look at them all and see just where the influence resonates shall we?

Metal Gear - NES Nintendo 8-bit system

Say what you ask? Yeah, I hear you my friend. I couldn't believe it when I first saw it either. It's Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) from The Terminator! Just look, almost everything about him fits the bill perfectly with Solid Snake on the front cover of the NES Metal Gear game. I think we can put this one aside and say that Konami very likely took reference from that movie and put it to good use. What do you think?

Contra NES Nintendo 8-bit system

No, your eyes are not deceiving you, that certainly looks like an Arnold Schwarzenegger influence to me. How about you? While your at it, here is another movie reference you can add to the mix. H.G. Giger who died last year was the famous artist who influenced the Alien movies, and in turn the films also influenced Contra. That works for me as they both seem to get along just fine.

Policenauts - PC-9821 - 3D0 - Playstation 1 - Sega Saturn

Mel Gibson anyone? Policenauts was a great graphic adventure game that took some of the character designs from the Lethal Weapon movies. I assume by now you can start to get a feel of what kind of films Hideo Kojima liked to watch. Some nice choices I might add, and if you haven't played this one then you have a number of options to choose from. First the not so available PC-9821 Japanese computer system, and the rest you shouldn't have too much trouble as they are on 3D0, Playstation 1, and the Sega Saturn consoles.

Snatcher - PC-8801 - PC Engine Super CD-ROM2 - Mega/Sega CD - Playstation 1 - Sega Saturn

Snatcher is a cyberpunk futuristic graphical adventure game that has you investigating the deaths of people who were killed and had their bodies taken over by artificial life forms, or "bioroids" if you will. The reference above is a pretty clear indication that the main character called Gillian Seed appears to be that of  Rick Deckard, who is the main character in one of my personal favorite movies of all time,......Blade Runner! A personal Harrison Ford pick and a very good one by Kojima.

So after taking a look at just a few of examples of video games getting inspiration from Hollywood movies, I guess Kojima was right, 70% of his body IS made up of movies. If you know any other movie to Konami references, feel free to point them out in the comment section below. I'd like to hear your feedback.
