For all of you game collectors looking for a good deal, a few pointers first

September 20, 2016

It had to happen sooner or later, and it's about time I covered this issue, and made some valid points about it. You are a game collector, and a game system collector, but oh where to turn for that special deal, huh?

The one where you can turn to your friends and say "Look what I just bought and for how much!" Yeah, I've been there many times, and it doesn't look like I'm about to quit any time soon.

Over the years I've been collecting game systems and games like mad crazy. Everything from Super Nintendo, Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, to Neo Geo and even some Japanese game systems like Bandai Playdia, MSX, FM-Towns Marty, and PC-FX.

So much has changed over the years, including the cost. What was once about 30-40 bucks for a complete system back then in used shape, will now run you somewhere around $120 or more in some cases.

So what is a gamer to do these days? What is worth collecting, and what will it cost you? Obviously you want to collect that which you know will be in short supply someday, as we can easily use the Dreamcast as an example. Oh yes......I did go there.

The DC was once a system that was so plentiful, you could get a complete set for $30 bucks, and that's sometimes with a game included!

Nowadays, you will be lucky to get a "console only", with no cables, game or controller for the same price. That goes for a lot of consoles at that. Hopefully in good condition and one that hasn't yellowed to the point of looking like a block of butter.

Or how about a Sega Saturn, as this was considered the "underdog" console when it launched right around the same time the Playstation 1 did, but having failed in the market when competing against it.

The Saturn is now turning some heads once again, and people are noticing that there are quite a number of great games to take a second look at, and thus collecting them.

Here is a personal list of game consoles you should consider when getting into game collecting.

  • Super Nintendo
  • Genesis
  • TurboGrafx-16
  • Neo Geo
  • Dreamcast
  • Saturn
  • NES
  • Playstation
  • Playstation 2
  • GameCube
  • Nintendo Wii

Feel free to add to that list, and here are some hand held game systems to consider.

  • Game Boy
  • Game Boy Advance
  • Nintendo DS
  • PSP
  • Turbo Express
  • Sega Game Gear
  • Sega Nomad
  • Atari Lynx

Notice how I try not to include current on shelf titles, even though there are some Nintendo DS games still floating around, the market has mostly shifted to 3DS. Now might be a good time to start hoarding those precious DS games that are getting just a little bit harder to find these days.

But enough of my ranting, on to some pick videos that will shed some more light for you collectors out there, courtesy of these folks for sharing their stuff to YouTube. Along with an Angry Video Game Nerd video on what you probably should avoid out there. Happy game hunting!
