Retrogaming classic arcade game of the week - Sunset Riders

March 18, 2015

Ahh the old west, a time when the rules of engagement were very few, and the good, the bad, and the ugly go head to head. So why not make a game out of it? After all, there have been so many western movies made about it that it only seems fitting. Sunset Riders takes the cake this week for a classic arcade game that made you want to bring a friend to the arcade so you wouldn't have to go at it alone.

It makes use of the TMNT-2 (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Turtles in Time) arcade board, along with a nice 4 player setup system to boot. Released in September of 1991, this mega hit caught the eye of more than just a few fans, and was later ported to the Genesis / Megadrive and Super Nintendo consoles the following years.

The mission was simply and crystal clear, four bounty hunters are out to cash in on the rewards for taking out the best of the best outlaws and wanted criminals. Wanted dead or alive, at the beginning of each stage you are shown the outlaw you must get, along with the reward for doing so.

The arcade machine came in both 2  player and 4  player designs, with an awesome looking marquee and cabinet graphics tagging along with it. Whether your using the good old revolver, or a nice shotgun, Sunset riders is a great action game that should be released on other modern day formats. Or you could just get your SNES or Genesis console out of the closet, wipe the dust off, and fire this one up as it is one that must be relived again.
