The early days of Castlevania and Nintendo Power magazine

October 24, 2014

I love it when I'm not the only one in the world that can take a look back in time and appreciate some of the finer moments in gaming's golden age. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest was a part of that era, and I remember playing until I couldn't stay awake any longer.

It was one of, if not the first game to introduce the concept of night and day into a game, when enemies became stronger and harder to defeat. The phrases "What a horrible night to have a curse", and "The morning sun has vanquished the horrible night", where two lines you just kept having to see over and over, which might have become annoying for some players.

Recently was an article that took a good look back at some classic gems a good number of us remember, Simon's Quest being one of them. Their Retro Vault article does it justice with a bit more than a simple mention. I might add one fact that some didn't know about.

The issue of Nintendo Power magazine that had Simon's Quest on the front cover received some controversy over it in that it was a bit graphic for some kids, even giving them nightmares. At least that's the official story from what I understand. Take a look at the image of it below and see what you think.

Another issue is that of Super Contra (Super C), and shows some really cool looking cover art on the front. Those were the days eh?
